MMA competition gloves weigh 4 oz or more under the Unified Rules, and most commissions allow 4 to 6 oz (Nevada 4–8 oz, New Jersey 4, 5 or 6 oz); amateurs wear at least 6 oz. 7 oz hybrid gloves add padding for sparring and bag work while keeping the fingers free to grip.
Competition: the commission decides
The Unified Rules of MMA require gloves of at least 4 oz approved by the commission, with no cap at 6 oz because the largest sizes (3XL to 5XL) can weigh more. New Jersey allows 4, 5 or 6 oz; Nevada 4 to 8 oz. Amateurs wear at least 6 oz.
MMA gloves are open-fingered so the fighter can grip and grapple; the padding sits over the knuckles only. That is why a 4 oz glove is a competition glove and not a training one.
Bodyweight bands differ by brand
Fairtex at 0–80 lb (0–36 kg).
Below 80 lb, youth charts take over from the adult bands.
Hand and wraps
Measure the hand round the knuckles with the thumb out, without wraps. Fairtex’s 4 / 6 oz band is under 5.5". Wraps fill part of the glove: at the top of the band with 180" wraps on, go one rung up.
