What 8 oz is for
8 oz gloves are made for professional bouts and youth sparring. Top Ten lists 8 oz for competition at up to 60 kg. Nevada: 8 oz for pros up to 135 lb, and to 147 lb if both boxers agree.
8 oz is 8 oz lighter than the usual 16 oz sparring glove: faster, with more feedback from the bag, and the weight bouts are fought in.
Bodyweight bands differ by brand
Rival’s youth chart at 70–90 lb (32–41 kg); Fairtex at 80–112 lb (36–51 kg).
Where the two disagree for an 80–112 lb boxer, sparring takes the heavier answer and bag work the lighter.
Hand and wraps
Measure the hand round the knuckles with the thumb out, without wraps. Fairtex’s 8 oz band is 5.5–6.5". Wraps fill part of the glove: at the top of the band with 180" wraps on, go one rung up.
